The European Union has offered to provide education assistance to the three southern Thai provinces which have a Muslim majority - Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani - where more than 2,400 people have been killed in violent clashes in the past three years.

Government spokesman, Yongyuth Mayalap, told The Bangkok Post that the offer had come from Friedrich Hamburger, head of the EU's diplomatic delegation to Bangkok during a meeting with prime minister Surayad Chulanont on Monday.

No other details were released about the offer.

The EU had followed the situation in the deep South closely and continually raised the issue for discussion with relevant agencies in Thailand, the spokesman quoted Hamburger as saying.

Thailand which is mostly Buddhist has a minority Muslim population, concentrated in its southern provinces.
