EU official says Christianity 'not criteria', backs Turkey
EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel said that the "Christianity was not included among the Copenhagen criteria", and added that no one could object to Turkey's membership to the EU on the ground of its religion.

Speaking at a panel discussion hosted by the Union of European-Turkish Democrats in Brussels, Michel extended his support to Turkey's membership.

He highlighted strategic importance of Turkey with its young population, developing economy and powerful army.

Michel said that Turkey had made a significant progress in its democratic and economic reform process since the beginning of its candidacy.

He added that Turkey's membership would prove that the Islam and the western world could set up dialogue with each other.
