Former Jordanian lawmaker Ahmed Uwaidi al-Abbadi began a hunger strike in prison Saturday to "protest" his detention conditions at Juweideh jail, according to an official spokesman.
"As of this morning, al-Abbadi refrained from taking food, water or medicine to protest his detention conditions" Public Security Directorate spokesman Major Bashir Daaja said in a statement.
"A doctor at the Juweideh Correction and Rehabilitation Centre was following up his health conditions," he added.
Daaja said that "all inmates at the centre were enjoying suitable and humanitarian conditions as guaranteed by the law in accordance with universally-observed criteria".
Al-Abbadi, a politician, was arrested last month after he published an article on an internet website that was deemed by the authorities as "harmful to the state's dignity."
