In addition to the president, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Finance Minister Kemal Unakıtan, İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş, and former Industry and Trade Minister Ali Coşkun attended the funeral service held at Fatih Mosque in İstanbul on Monday. President Gül and Prime Minister Erdoğan offered condolences to the grieving family shortly before the funeral. Hundreds of relatives, admirers and former and current students gathered at the mosque hours before the funeral services began. Zaim was laid to rest in a family plot in the Edirnekapı Cemetery following the funeral prayer at noon.

The deputy chairman of the Felicity Party (SP), Numan Kurtulmuş, shared his reflections on Zaim during the funeral. Kurtulmuş told journalists that in addition to Zaim's services at the university he had enlightened many others with countless conferences, seminars and articles. He also said that Zaim was a regular giver of charity.

Ali Coşkun, a former industry and trade minister, stated that Zaim had remained an exemplary figure in society throughout his life. He said he had had the honor to work with Zaim in a number of civil society organizations, such as the Intellectuals Club, the Turkish National Culture Foundation and the Business World Foundation. An aide to the prime minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, said Zaim was an example for everyone and that he was loved by students from every segment of society. Some of his students have later become important scientists, politicians and bureaucrats, Davutoğlu noted.

Nevzat Yalçıntaş, a former parliamentary deputy, said Zaim was an extraordinary social economist. Yalçıntaş also said Zaim was indirectly influential in the establishment of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). "His students founded the party, but they consulted him in drafting the by-laws and the party program." Yalçıntaş said Abdullah Gül was a very good student of the late professor.
