Firefighters continued their battle to extinguish dozens of forest fires across the country Friday amid strong winds and rising temperatures which are set to reach 40 degrees Celcius over the weekend.
More than 1,500 fires have broken out throughout the country in July this year, twice as many as in the same period last year, fire officials said.
A forest fire that has been burning in the Peloponnese, in western Greece, forced the evacuation of towns and summer camps while firefighters were confronting fires on the Ionion island of Zakynthos, near the central town of Nafpaktos and the southern Peloponese region of Mani.
Firefighters and rescue workers have had to battle more than 150 fires in the 24 hours alone amid strong winds and rising temperatures.
Clearly overwhelmed, Greece has asked the European Union for help. France is sending two fire-fighting aircraft and Germany has offered a helicopter.
