FM: Russia, U.S. to hold talks on missile shield
Russia and the United States will discuss the U.S. plans to deploy anti-ballistic missile components in Eastern Europe next week, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"A Russian delegation will hold negotiations on missile defense issues in Washington on July 30-31," Itar-Tass news agency quoted Lavrov as saying at a government meeting chaired by President Vladimir Putin.

"The Russian position will rest upon your initiative and departmental proposals... We hope that this round will promote your initiative, which implies the active involvement of third countries in the missile defense project," Lavrov was quoted as saying.

Russia, strongly opposed to the U.S. plan, has offered to share a radar base in Azerbaijan as part of the anti-ballistic missiles system, which consists of interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic.
