Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier signed foundation agreement of Turkish-German University, which was planned to be built in Istanbul, in Berlin on Friday.
Babacan said that Turkish-German University would strengthen the cooperation between the two countries as well as further enrich the mutual relations by meeting the need of educated human source.
Babacan said that the trade volume between Turkey and Germany exceeded 22 billion Euro; and 3,000 German companies were working in Turkey, while three million Turks were living in Germany. He added that nearly 70,000 Germans decided to live in Turkey.
Babacan said that more than four million German tourists visited Turkey in 2007. He added that 60,000 Turks were employers in Germany, and they contributed to German economy.
Upon a question, Babacan said that Turkish and German parliaments would approve the agreement and then an appropriate land would be found to build the university in Istanbul.
Following the ceremony, the two ministers held a bilateral meeting. They will hold a joint press conference.
