Three Georgian border guards were found shot dead near the Turkish border on Wednesday and a fourth was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Georgian media reported that two of the victims were found dead in their sleeping bags at a checkpoint in the village of Adigeni near the former Soviet republic's border with Turkey.
"Officers of the Interior Ministry of Georgia have detained Levan Gabashvili (born 1982) on suspicion of the murder of Khitcha Baramidze, Shota Asanidze and Arsen Sainidze," police said in a statement.
"The investigation is in progress," it added. There was no information on the possible motive for the killing.
Police had quickly ruled out the possibility of a "cross-border incident". According to the statement, the men were killed shortly after 5.00 a.m. (0100 GMT).
Gabashvili was arrested after a manhunt lasting several hours, with roads around Adigeni sealed off by police.
