German Chancellor Merkel to visit Israel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will head for Tel Aviv for a Palm Sunday visit leading a high-profile group of German cabinet members.

German Chancellor Merkel to visit Israel
The visit comes on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the occupying regime.

Former German Prime Minister Joschka Fischer once said that it was incredible Germany and Israel had "any kind of relationship at all," in light of the Holocaust story.

Experts say that the visit is aimed at bolstering ties and will not focus on the Palestinian issue.

The German chancellor will address the Knesset Tuesday, but her speech will be in the German language, "the language of the perpetrators," as decried by some. It is anticipated that the speech will enrage some Israelis, in particular Holocaust survivors.
