'Giving up Turkey's guarantorship in Cyprus 'unacceptable'

Turgay Avci, Deputy PM and FM of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said Wednesday that Turkey's effective and actual guarantorship was an indispensable matter for TRNC.

'Giving up Turkey's guarantorship in Cyprus 'unacceptable'
Releasing a statement, Avci said Greek FM Dora Bakoyannis' remarks, which considered Turkey's guarantorship unnecessary and suggested EU's assuming such duty, were "unacceptable".

"Turkey's guarantorship rights in Cyprus were established by international agreements, and unless all parties agree to change such agreements, the rights and obligations of the parties stemming from these agreements cannot be abrogated," Avci said.

"The biggest contribution Greece could make regarding this matter would be to encourage the Greek Cypriot party towards a solution, rather than dealing with guarantorship which is an issue already concluded with international agreements," he added.
