The chairman of the Federation of Industries of Northern Greece, George Milonas, was abducted late on Monday by unknown assailants and authorities have called in anti-terrorist police to investigate, Greek police said.
'An eyewitness saw Mr Milonas outside his home being taken by three armed assailants carrying automatic weapons at about 10:50 pm,' a police official who declined to be named told Reuters.
Milonas, who is also president and chief executive of the Greek aluminium company Alumil ALMr.AT was thrown into the back of his own car, which was then driven off by one of the assailants, the official said.
His car was found abandoned about three kilometres from his house in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki and has been taken by police as evidence. Police suspect that he was then transferred to another vehicle.
'We are treating this as a very serious matter and have called in the anti-terrorist unit,' the official said. Road blocks have also been set up throughout the city and across northern Greece.
