Hacker breaks into university server
Officials at the University of Michigan were forced to notify about 5,500 current and former students after a hacker broke into the school's server.

The notification, put out two weeks ago, told current and former students that their personal information may be compromised, The Detroit News reported Sunday.

University spokeswoman Kelly Cunningham said the hacker gained access to the server some time between June 19 and July 3. The server was shut down after authorities noticed suspicious activity, the News reported.

The server contained two databases with personal information of former and current students.

"There was no financial data," Cunningham said. "There was no credit card information."

Cunningham said there appeared to be no damage to the server, the newspaper said.
