Hamas Friday rejected the nomination by President Mahmoud Abbas of current Finance Minister Salam Fayyad as prime-minister designate of an care-taker government.
Spokesman Ismail Radwam said Hamas did not recognize the nomination, which he called an 'illegitimate step.'
Hamas, which won a majority in parliament in the January 2006 elections, slammed Abbas's decision as a "coup".
"It is a coup against legitimacy and a transgression of all the laws," spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP.
"... We ask President Abbas to withdraw the decision in order to preserve the integrity of our people," he said, urging Fayyad to turn down the new post and "not to pose himself a party to this problem".
Calling for calm and self-restraint, sacked premier Ismail Haniyeh on Friday affirmed that his is still functioning despite being dismissed by Abbas, proposing reconciliation talks with Fatah.
