Hamas on Thursday warned that it would prevent any early presidential and legislative elections to be held in the Palestinian territories.
"We will not allow any one to turn against the Palestinian voters' will and to jump over the results of the last legislative elections before their legal term ends," Hamas said in a statement faxed to the press.
On Wednesday, President Mahmoud Abbas said in Ramallah that the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) central council was set to discuss holding early elections in the Palestinian territories.
Speaking before the Palestinian National Council, Abbas also vowed to punish Hamas in Gaza Strip.
In a response, Hamas strongly slammed the Palestinian president, saying he "favors the Israeli occupation's intentions."
Hamas also said that Abbas should be blamed on his statements that Hamas leaders "have dug their graves by their fingers," which Hamas considered as "an open call for killing."
