Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday asserted that the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal does not prevent the government from conducting nuclear tests in future.

"In our wisdom, if any necessity arises, nothing in this agreement prohibits you from undertaking any nuclear tests. The agreement protects the sovereignty of the nation," Dr Singh told the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament).

Dr Singh said that his government was following what the erstwhile Indian government had done by committing itself to a unilateral moratorium on conducting nuclear tests.
