Iran's parliament elected one of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's potential rivals for the Iranian presidency as the assembly's new speaker on Sunday, official media reported.

Ali Larijani, who quit as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator last year citing differences with Ahmadinejad over how to handle the country's atomic row with the West, received 237 votes out of 259 cast in the 290-member legislature.
