The first batch of Iranian pilgrims arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday for this year's Haj, or pilgrimage to Muslim holy sites, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

Iranian pilgrims arrive in Saudi for Haj
The 436 people arrived on a flight operated by the Saudi national carrier Saudia to the Red Sea city of Jeddah, which is some 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

Some 100,000 Iranians perform the hajj, which peaks with the gathering of all pilgrims to offer prayers at the holy mount of Arafat on December 19 or 20.
