Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for Damascus Thursday morning for an official visit to Syria, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for Damascus Thursday morning for an official visit to Syria, the official IRNA news agency reported.

During his day-long visit, the two presidents will discuss issues of mutual interest, including ways to expand mutual cooperation in bilateral, regional and international issues, the report said.

Ahmadinejad, who visits Syria at the invitation of his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, is accompanied by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Housing and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Saeedi-Kia.

The Iranian president is to return home later Thursday after paying pilgrimage to holy shrines of Syria.

Ahmadinejad's visit, two days after Assad's inauguration as president for a second seven-year term, is his second trip to Syria since he became president in August 2005.
