Iraq plans to integrate Sunni tribal squads into police
The Iraqi government and US troops plan to train members of the so-called Awakening Councils, formed mainly by Sunni Arab tribes, to fight the insurgency in Sunni areas, according to an official with the multinational forces in Iraq.

"There is an elementary plan, not an agreement, between the US troops and the Iraqi government led by (Prime Minister Nuri) al- Maliki to train members of the Awakening Councils as a step towards integrating them into the police," said Jinah Hamud, the coordinator of the joint media centre of the multinational forces in Iraq.

"The US troops are still backing the Awakening Councils and paying them monthly salaries of between 300 and 400 dollars," Hamud told the Voices of Iraq news agency.

"Not all members of Awakening Councils receive salaries, but some of them get on-off payments when they report weapons and explosives hideouts," Hamud said.

The US military has been training and bankrolling tribal police forces mainly in Sunni Arab areas after many local tribal leaders turned against al-Qaeda.
