Iraq to free Bush shoe thrower early

The court will free an Iraqi journalist jailed after hurling his shoes at former President George W. Bush next month after his sentence was reduced for good behavior, reports said.

Muntadhar al-Zeidi became a hero across the world for his act of defiance last December amid anger over the US occupation in 2003.

The 30-year-old will now be freed three months early on September 14 for good behaviour, his lawyer said.

"We have been informed officially about the court decision," Karim al-Shujairi said.

Thousands demonstrated for al-Zeidi's release and hailed his gesture.

The journalist shouted in Arabic: "This is your farewell kiss, you dog! This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

The act transformed the unknown TV reporter into a national celebrity.

A sofa-sized sculpture of a shoe was erected in his honour in Tikrit, but the Iraqi government later removed it.
