Israeli security officials said that air defence missiles have been deployed, after the assassination last week of Hezbollah's top military commander, Imad Mughniyeh, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

Israel deploys Patriot missiles in north

The US-made patriot missiles have been reportedly deployed as a precautionary measure in the northern port city of Haifa.

The patriot missiles were put on standby for the first time since Israel's month-long war against Lebanon in July 2006.

Haifa was hit by Hezbollah's Katyusha and Syrian-made Fajr-3 missiles during the 2006 conflict.

Haifa has a large Arab-Israeli population and is the third largest city after Tel Aviv and disputed Jerusalem.

Syria and Lebanon have accused Israel of the murder of Mughniyeh, killed in a car bomb attack in the Syrian capital Damascus on Wednesday.
