Turkey was a candidate to host the championships in 2010, however the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) chose Qatari capital of Doha as the venue of the event.

IAAF executives visited Istanbul on November 5th, met Turkish State Minister Murat Basesgioglu and visited sports facilities.
