Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema arrived Monday on a one-day visit as part of a tour he is making in the area which will take him to Lebanon next.
He is expected to meet with Syrian officials to sort out such issues as the situation in Lebanon, including UN resolution 1071 regarding Lebanon, and the formation of the international tribunal looking into the case of the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri.
D'Alema, whose country presides currently over the UNIFIL forces in Southern Lebanon, had expressed last month his wish to visit Syria to discuss with its officials crucial regional issues.
His visit here comes at the heels of last Wednesday's adoption by the UN security council resolution 1757 on the establishment of an international tribunal to probe into the Hariri assassination based on the seventh chapter of the UN charter.
