Former Japanese finance minister Sadakazu Tanigaki has decided to run for the election for the next leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Kyodo news agency reported on Sunday, citing LDP sources.
Tanigaki, 64, told his close LDP lawmakers he is planning to run for the race to succeed the outgoing prime minister and the head of the party, Taro Aso, Kyodo reported.
The LDP was severely defeated at last month's general election and will be removed formally from power on Wednesday after its worst election performance since the conservative party was founded in 1955.
The government led by prime minister-elect Yukio Hatoyama is set to be formed on Sept 16.
