Kosovo parties plan to hold elections in autumn
Kosovo's most prominent political parties said Wednesday they plan to hold parliamentary and local elections in November.

"The holding of parliamentary and municipal elections this autumn is necessary for ensuring the needed local and central credibility," Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu told reporters.

Sejdiu said that both the ruling and opposition parties in Kosovo support the initiative for new elections.

Kosovo has been a virtual protectorate under UN administration since conflict between Serbian forces and Albanian paramilitaries ended in 1999, which means that UN administrator in Kosovo Joachim Ruecker would have the final say on whether the elections would be held in November.

President Sejdiu noted that the elections, though necessary, should in no way delay the process of determining Kosovo's future status any further.

"Solving the status of Kosovo is an absolute priority, above all other political processes in Kosovo. This is the attitude of all the political players involved," Sejdiu said.
