Largest shipyard of Middle East to be built in Turkey

A Turkish company plans to invest 390 million USD to build a shipyard in western province of Canakkale's Gelibolu town that will be the largest in the Middle East.

The shipyard, which will cover an area of 847,000 square meters, is expected to be completed in 2012, said Ahmet Kalkavan, an executive of Gelibolu Ship Industries.

"Large vessels, such as oil tankers and dry cargo ships, container ships, luxurious liners, as well as boats and yachts will be build in the shipyard," Kalkavan told the A.A..

The shipyard will also be able to build stealth frigates, corvettes and other warships for naval forces.
