Latvian government to resign

As the Latvian government prepares to step down, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis told LNT channel on Wednesday that resignation is the only solution to "cool down hot heads."

Latvian government to resign
Latvia's longest-serving prime minister, Kalvitis, 41, is expected to announce his resignation following a meeting with President Valdis Zatlers at 12 pm (0900 GMT).

Although the four-party ruling coalition maintains a majority in parliament, the Kalvitis government, led by the People's Party, has been under pressure since October when thousands of angry Latvians demanded the government's resignation.

Then president Vaira Vike-Freiberga appointed Kalvitis on December 2, 2004.

He was the only prime minister in the small Baltic nation to survive an election in 2006.

The ruling coalition includes the People's Party, the Union of Greens and Farmers, Latvia's First Party and the party For Fatherland and Freedom. It has 56 seats in the 100-seat unicameral parliament.
