Latvia's president on Friday named outgoing interior minister Ivars Godmanis as his candidate to become prime minister, asking the Latvian politician veteran to form a new government.

President Valdis Zatlers made the comments at a news conference. The previous government had to resign after protests over its attempted dismissal of the head of Latvia's anti-corruption bureau and several ministerial resignations.

Godmanis, 56, was prime minister between 1990 and 1993, after Latvia broke free from 50 years of Soviet rule. He lost power in the economic crisis which followed independence.

He returned to politics as finance minister between 1998-1999 and then made another comeback as interior minister in the outgoing cabinet, a post he has held since October 2006.
