The Lebanese opposition bloc dismissed on Monday the government draft amendment of Article 49 of the State Constitution and deemed it "worthless."

"The draft will only complicate the matters in the country," said MP of Development and Liberation bloc Ali Hassan Khalil in a press conference at the premises of the Lebanese House of Representatives in Ein Attin.

"The position expressed by the illegitimate government is worthless as it has no constitutional value," he asserted.

"Article 74 of the constitution is clear in defining the way of handling the state affairs in case of vacancy of presidential post," he noted.

Khalil wondered whether the ruling majority aimed through their draft to accelerate or hinder the election of Army chief General Michel Suleiman as head of state.

"The House of Representatives will neither wink at the illegitimacy of the government nor serve as venue for the government attempt to monopolize powers, " he vowed.

"The house will continue its sessions till a consensus is developed," the MP pointed out.

Khalil reaffirmed that the opposition had nothing against nomination of Suleiman as new head of state.

Meanwhile, MP of the Change and Renewal bloc Nabil Nicola lashed at the cabinet meeting held earlier Monday and deemed it "a provocative act at a time when the opposition was seeking a compromise.

"The meeting further complicated the affair and planted more obstacles in front of the opposition with a view to holding the opposition responsible for the stalemate," Nicola disclosed.

The Lebanese cabinet approved the draft amendment of Article 49 of the State Constitution to facilitate election of Suleiman as new president.
