Nabih Berri, the parliament speaker, announced the postponement in a terse statement on Monday, saying that the session would resume on December 17.
Suleiman, the army chief who has the support of rival political blocs, needs parliamentary approval and a constitutional amendment before he can assume the post.
The postponement came after the majority coalition of 68 legislators said they would boycott Tuesday's session.
