Dhoruba el-Mücahid bin Vahad faced murder charges in connection with the killing of two policemen during his struggle against racism. A wrong verdict landed him a 19-year prison sentence but in 1990 evidence of his innocence was revealed and he was released.

Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world each year on this day. The date was chosen to honor the United Nations Great Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on Dec. 10, 1948, as the first global enunciation of human rights. The commemoration was established in 1950 when the General Assembly invited all states and interested organizations to celebrate the day.

As it does every year, the Human Rights Association (IHD) central office in Ankara called on citizens to attend a mass press declaration in each city that a branch of the organization exists. IHD central office and capital Ankara branch together with other nongovernmental organizations will gather in front of Human Rights statue at 12:30 in Yüksel street. At the same time the IHD Istanbul branch will gather in Taksim Square.

Amnesty International's Turkey branch will present today a project that will continue throughout 2008. At a press conference scheduled to be held in Istanbul at 10:30 a.m. today, Amnesty Turkey will introduce its plan to use various activities around Turkey to present and reinforce the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
