The Maldives will hold its first multi-party presidential poll on Oct. 4 pending parliamentary approval, the Indian Ocean archipelago nation's electoral commission said on Monday.

Maldives to hold presidential poll on Oct 4
"If they complete the supreme court and bill on presidential elections this week, on Oct. 4 we will have the elections," Elections Commissioner Mohamed Ibrahim told a news conference.

The bills, to set out the election procedure and finalise reform of the supreme court by approving five judges, are widely expected to pass this week.

The election on the archipelago of 1,200 islands located 800 km (500 miles) off India's southern tip is the culmination of reforms established by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, in power since 1978.

Gayoom will stand for re-election against seven other candidates vying to rule the island chain of 300,000 mostly Sunni Muslims, renowned for luxury resorts and expensive honeymoons.
