Turkey's Telecommunications Board (TK) was pleased when a court rejected a demand by Turkcell that filed a lawsuit asking the cancellation of mobile number portability (MNP).
Board Chairman Tayfun Acarer told Sabah that they will speed up their efforts to establish an infrastructure just like GSM operators which are working to build their infrastructures for MNP.
Costs of this project to be realized by TK will be paid by Vodafone and Avea GSM operators competing with Turkcell on the Turkish market, sources said.
MNP system and its infrastructure is expected to be completed by March 2008.
"Number portability will begin in September or October 2008, the latest, for mobile phones and in March 2009 for fixed lines," Acarer said.
Once this system is started, subscribers will be able to change their operators without changing their phone numbers, Acarer said, noting that this means competition and higher service quality, as well as drop in costs.
