More Chinese Muslims Perform Hajj This Year

At least 1,000 Chinese pilgrims will take part in the annual Hajj pilgrimage this year, said Li Lan, director of the regional Administration of Religious Affairs.

The figure is the biggest since Chinese Muslims resumed pilgrimage trips to Mecca in 1979, said Chang Qingliang, an official with the Islamic Association of China (IAC).

Earlier this week, a group of 600 Chinese Muslims from the northern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region arrived in the holy city of Mecca, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The rest is expected to leave China before December 27.

The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, sometimes called "China's Muslim province", is one of the country's five minority autonomous regions, with a population of 2 million people.

As economic and living standards improve, more and more Muslims travel to take part in the annual Hajj.

Every able adult Muslim, is required to perform the Hajj, one of the man five pillars of Islam, at least once in his lives.
