Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that the most important event of 2005 for Turkey was the decision (of the European Union) to start full membership negotiations with Turkey.
''I believe the accession talks will start in March, 2006,'' said Erdogan.
Addressing to nation on the New Year's Eve, Prime Minister Erdogan said that 2005 was a very successful year for Turkey.
Referring to Turkey's EU bid, Erdogan said that Turkey's EU membership would be a very important step for installation of global peace and prosperity and for alliance of civilizations.
Erdogan said that scrapping six zeros from Turkish Lira (TL) and conversion into New Turkish Lira (YTL) further decreased the inflation rate.
''Our currency has its real value now because economic and financial stability has been fully established,'' Erdogan said.
''The inflation rate which was 30 percent three years ago dropped below 8 percent. This is the lowest inflation rate recorded in the last 35 years. We increased income per capita to 5,000 USD, and we decreased the budget deficit from 40 billion YTL to 14.6 billion YTL,'' Erdogan said.
Prime Minister Erdogan stressed that the government regarded the year 2006 as an investment year, and added that the unemployment rate would further decrease.
''We have increased investment allocations which were 10 billion YTL in 2005 budget to 15.1 billion YTL in 2006 budget. Our investment initiatives will continue in 2006 encouraged by the increasing interest of global capital in Turkey and therefore new employment opportunities for Turkish people will come out,'' Erdogan said.
Prime Minister Erdogan said that the highest share within 2006 budget went to education, adding that Turkey could only attain its goals in the future by a modern education system.
Erdogan stressed that the government united the state hospitals and Social Security Agency (SSK) hospitals under the same roof, noting that now citizens could go to any hospital. Erdogan emphasized that Turkey started to receive patients from abroad thanks to the investments it undertook in the field of health.
Referring to developments in the field of agriculture, Erdogan said that Turkey maintained its character of being an agricultural country in addition to the progress it recorded in industry and information technology. Erdogan said that no village would be left without water thanks to a new project which the government undertook.
Prime Minister Erdogan stressed that the government would continue to fight corruption.
Erdogan stressed that the government attributed great importance to independence of the judiciary.
Erdogan ended his words saying that the government's fight with ''bans, poverty and corruption'' would continue in the new year.
