Motorcycle bomb wounds 28 in Yala region

"Unknown assailants" detonated a bomb in a busy market on Monday, wounding 28 people in the Muslim-dominated region.

One soldier and three civilians were seriously wounded when the bomb, hidden in a motorcycle, was detonated remotely at the bustling morning market in Yala.

Local Muslims oppose emergency rule Thai government extended in April and the presence of thousands of soldiers deployed including Thais armed by the state.

Police said 24 others were also wounded.

No one has claimed responsibility.

Yala is one of three provinces, Narathiwat and Pattani, once an independent Muslim sultanate until occupied by predominantly Buddhist Thailand.

Human rights groups have previously accused Thai authorities of major abuses in the south, including the use of unnecessary force in the 2004 siege of a mosque in which 32 suspected insurgents were killed.
