Police are looking for the attackers, who killed shortly after midnight on Sunday a deputy of the People's Assembly (parliament) of Karachai-Cherkessia Republic, Russian news agency reported.
Marat Akbayev was gunned down in the city of Cherkessk at about 00:45, Moscow time, sources from the republican interior ministry said.
They said police have "the description of the criminals and concrete evidence".
According to the ministry, the 40-year-old parliamentarian was killed near the Orbita recreation centre.
"The deputy was in an Infinity vehicle, and died at the site of wounds," the sources added.
The criminals right away drove away from the crime scene.
Criminal proceedings have been launched.
According to information of the republican parliament, Akbayev was born in the settlement of Kumysh. He was elected deputy of the republican People's Assembly on the ticket of the Patriots of Russia Party. He was member of the committee for industry of the Russian State Duma lower house of parliament.
