Musharraf will not reinstate judges

Although he has lifted his six-week emergency rule decree, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf says he has no plans to reinstate suspended judges.

Musharraf will not reinstate judges
Musharraf told Sunday's Washington Post the judges will not regain their positions.

"No, not at all," he said. "What judges? Why should they be restored? New judges are there. They will never be restored."

Dismissing a suggestion the West would find it difficult to understand his stance, the president said, "Let them not understand. They should come to Pakistan and understand Pakistan."

Asked about the judges handpicked by his government to replace the dismissed ones, Musharraf was quoted as saying, "No, there is no restoration of courts required -- the courts are already there.

"We took action," he continued. "The judges had to take oaths, and those that took the oaths are there. Those that did not are gone. This action was validated by the Supreme Court of Pakistan."
