Philippine Muslims will start to fast for holy month Ramadan on Saturday, according to Grand Mufti's ruling, a report said.

Grand Mufti Ustadz Omar Pasigan ruled that since the new moon was not visible Thursday night from lunar observing points in different parts of the archipelago, Inquirer said.

"we will start fasting on Saturday, God willing," Pasigan was quoted as saying.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, every day during this month, Muslims around the abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours.

Islam believers in the European Union (EU), Turkey, and the Balkans will start the first day of Ramadan fasting on Friday.
