Described as "particularly nasty" by city police, the daubings on the back of the brand-new building were immediately cleaned off and police began an inquiry against persons unknown for incitement to racial hatred.
Police in Lindau, on the border with Austria, admitted they initially had no clues as to who was responsible.
The previous evening, an incendiary device was ignited outside another mosque, at Lauingen, 100 kilometres to the north, but the fire was quickly extinguished. Police said they had made no arrests.
