A galaxy of Muslim scholars,thinkers and intellectuals representing all Islamic sects are huddling togetherin the Omani capital
"Ijitihad has become ahuman necessity because the human development has no limits," Grand Muftiof Oman Ahmad bin Hamad Al-Khalili told the opening of the Omani conference onFiqh An-Nawazil and At-Tajdid fil Fatwa (Shari`ah Rulings on ContemporaryIssues and the Renewal of Fatwas).
He stressed the importance ofcollective ijtihad for dealing with new and contemporary issues that need deepand profound studies.
"This can be reachedthrough Fiqh academies," he added.
Scholars, thinkers andintellectuals from different countries are attending the conference, organizedby the Omani Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs and sponsored by the OmaniMinistry of Heritage and Culture.
More than 20 research papers aregoing to be submitted for discussion in the four-day conference.
The sessions are held at thelectures hall of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which was inaugurated onFriday, May 4, 2001.
Dr. Abdlrahman al-Salimi, editor-in-chiefof al-Tasamoh magazine and head of the organizing committee, said theissues of dealing with nawazil is imposing itself on the local and world arena.
He criticized hard-line,intolerant and irresponsible individual fatwas.
Salimi pressed for moderation,tolerance and accuracy in issuing fatwas based on sound ijtihad.
