One person died and firefighters were trying to free at least two more people trapped in an oil tanker which exploded and caught fire while undergoing repairs near the Greek port of Piraeus Monday, the Athens News Agency (ANA) reported.

The three men were cleaning the storage tanks of the Panama- flagged oil tanker when the explosion occurred in the shipping dock of Perama, near Piraeus. The fire which followed filled the area with thick black smoke.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

More than two dozen firefighters and rescuers were involved in the effort to put out the fire at the Perama docks, located approximately 15 kilometres west of Athens.
