Pakistan's new Taliban chief alive, meets reporters

Newly appointed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud met with reporters in Pakistan's tribal areas, ending speculations on his death.

It is the first public appearance by the Taliban chief since he took control after his predecessor was killed in a US missile attack in August.

Hakimullah Mehsud looked healthy in pictures broadcast by Pakistan's Dawn Television on Monday.

Mehsud, surrounded by other Taliban commanders in a show of unity, spoke to a small group of reporters on Sunday on condition the interview only be published on Monday, the Dawn said.

Sailab Mehsud, one of the journalist who met the chief on Sunday, said Hakimullah had vowed revenge for Baitullah's killing.
