Philippines President welcomes Libyan leader Gaddafi's son

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo met Thursday with the eldest son of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi during his trip to help the peace efforts in the country's Muslim south.

Arroyo expressed her gratitude to Saif al Islam Gaddafi, president of the Gaddafi Foundation for Charity Associations and Developments, who has been active in helping the country's Muslim minority in the southern region of Mindanao.

He was scheduled to meet with leaders of groups the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in an effort to boost peace and development in Mindanao.

Jesus Dureza, presidential adviser on the peace process, said Gaddafi's visit underscored Libya's important role in ongoing efforts to establish peace in Mindanao.

"Libya will continue helping us in the peace and development efforts, especially in southern Philippines," he said.

Libya played a key role in the 1996 peace agreement signed between the government and the MNLF. But the group has since accused the government of failing to implement key provisions of the pact, including the promised development of conflict areas.

The MILF, which broke away from the MNLF in 1978, is engaged in separate peace negotiations with the government. The two sides hope to sign an agreement next year.
