The central council of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) recommended on Thursday to dissolve fighters of rival Fatah and Hamas movements.
The recommendation comes one day after President Mahmoud Abbas, who is also chairman of the PLO, rejected to hold talks with Hamas leaders when chairing a meeting of the central council on Wednesday.
The PLO, which is dominated by Abbas' Fatah movement, has long considered itself as the only representative of the Palestinian people. Hamas is not a member of the body.
Palestinian observers said the recommendation would satisfy an American demand which aims to pave the way for the implementation of the Roadmap peace plan in the Middle East.
