"I am the representative of the silent mass. Some people may gather in demonstrations and they are my citizens. If I were in favor of tension, I would have gathered ten times more of a crowd."
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan responded to questions about the most remarkable item on the agenda, the headscarf.
The Prime Minister emphasized that lifting the ban on the headscarf is a guarantee for secularism and for all citizens. Erdoğan challenged those, who are against the lifting of the ban on headscarf wearing, by saying: "if I was in favor of tension, I would have gathered 10 times more people than they have out there."
Erdoğan criticized CHP leader Deniz Baykal for pursuing votes from those who wear headscarves before the elections and added that it is not right to turn the issue into a matter of regime.
Erdoğan reminded of Deniz Baykal's statement; "no discrimination will be made between those who wear headscarves and those who do not."
Erdoğan stated: "In this country we are the guarantors for those who do not wear headscarfs, we also want to be the same for those who do wear headscarves. Neither I nor my cabinet will discriminate. We are the guarantee for our sisters and daughters, who do not wear headscarves. Why should this be a problem for Turkey? Let's get past this together."
