A local poll published on Tuesday showed that the sacked prime minister Ismail Haneya would defeat the current President Mahmoud Abbas to be new president if early presidential elections are held in the Palestinian territories.

A local poll published on Tuesday showed that the sacked prime minister Ismail Haneya would defeat the current President Mahmoud Abbas to be new president if early presidential elections are held in the Palestinian territories.

The poll conducted by the Jerusalem-based al-Quds Daily website gave the answer after collect opinions of 5,000 Palestinian browsers of the website at random.

The poll gave the browsers five choices, which are Mahmoud Abbas, Ismail Haneya, Marwan Barghouti, Mustafa Barghouti and Sallam Fayyad, as the ideal president in their mind.

The statistics showed that 51.38 percent of the browsers vote for Haneya, while only 13.37 percent of browsers vote for Abbas.

Jailed Fatah movement leader Marwan Barghouti also enjoys 12.62 percent support.

Former minister of information Mustafa Barghouti and current prime minister of the emergency government Sallam Fayyad ranked the fourth and fifth respectively.

Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which Haneya belongs to,defeated Abbas-led Fatah movement in the legislative elections on Jan. 25, 2006.

Political competition between the two rival movements finally escalated to armed infighting in the Gaza Strip, which ended up with a Hamas military takeover of the Strip on June 14.

Abbas, in return, sacked Hamas-led Palestinian unity government. He also swore in a new emergency government headed by Sallam Fayyad in the West Bank.
