Tony Blair, the envoy of the international Middle East Quartet, will meet the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during his visit here on Tuesday, sources with Abbas' office said on Monday.
Blair's mission "would be explorative to establish for his coming tasks and listen to the Palestinian and the Israeli side," said the sources, adding that the envoy will also meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ahead of meeting Abbas. However, Blair's visit was played down by the Islamic Hamas movement, which refuses to deal with a person who required Hamas to give up its principles.
"Such attempt would cost Blair his credibility," senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar said.
The visit by Blair, the former British prime minister, is his first trip to the Middle East since he was appointed the envoy of the Quartet, a peace body comprises the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
