Resignation of Iranian education minister confirmed

The resignation of Iranian Education Minister Mahmoud Farshidi was confirmed and accepted by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday, Khabar news network reported.

The resignation was reported earlier Sunday by the state media but then denied by Vice-President Ali Saeidlou, who told Fars news agency that the reports in this regard were false and aimed at weakening the government.

Free University Dean Ali-Reza Aliahmadi is said to be the most probable successor of Farshidi, Khabar said. Farshidi is be the eighth member of Ahmadinejad's cabinet to quit.

Before him the ministers for cooperatives, mines and metals, oil and social affairs, the vice-president and head of the planning and budget organization, the Central Bank governor and chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani have all resigned, reportedly due to differences with Ahmadinejad.
