Saca was set to take up the post at the one-day 31st Central American Summit in Guatemalan capital Guatemala City Wednesday, according to news reports.

He will succeed Guatemalan President Oscar Berger, current SICA president.

The Central American Summit will be attended by Guatemalan President Oscar Burger, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and Panamanian President Martin Torrijos.

The leaders will debate a range of issues relating to the regional integration process including security, agriculture, education and environment.

They will also subscribe to the Judiciary Draft Convention for Central American Customs (UAC) in order to relaunch talks with the European Union next February to reach a bilateral agreement.

Economy and trade ministers from the Central American countries had held a preliminary meeting prior to the summit to establish the content of a framework accord for the UAC.
